Course overview:

Youth remain an important site of social science knowledge construction and expertise. However, our settled understandings of social realities are challenged by transnational population flows, postcolonial critiques, the globalization of youth popular culture, and divestments in youth programs, among others. This course will critically examine the dominant discourses, assumptions, and perspectives in much scholarship on youth. We will consider to what degree current concepts such as hybridity or performativity intervene in the conventional approaches to studying youth. Finally, we’ll consider researchers’ own investments in youth and, specifically, the operation of nostalgia.
